This three-hour interactive seminar hosted by veteran translator and interpreter Simon Capp looks at Japanese to English translation from the perspective of a native English speaker. We’ll analyze the recent TQE104 paper and look at some key translation techniques, including common mistakes with grammar and punctuation. We’ll also talk about the realities of working with clients and translation companies in the modern era.
The seminar is divided into four sections:
・Key errors in TQE104 translations
・Insights into common mistakes and misconceptions in J to E translation
・Answers to your questions and queries (based on questionnaire responses)
・General discussion and Q&A session
It’s an interactive seminar, which means that you are encouraged to ask lots of questions and contribute your ideas. Remember, there is no such thing as a “correct” translation—every translator has their own style! But there are definitely some mistakes that we can avoid.
Prior to the seminar, I’ll ask you to do a trial translation of an extract from the TQE104 paper (if you’ve already done this, you can submit your previous translation). There will also be a questionnaire, where you can ask specific questions about J to E translation or about the English language in general, and put forward your ideas and suggestions for discussion.
The seminar will be based around your trial translations and questionnaire responses, so be sure to contribute!
Please note: I’m not a professor of English grammar, and I don’t have a university qualification in translation. But as a self-taught translator with over 30 years of experience, I’ve got plenty of insights to share with you.
Let’s talk translation!
